What Do Fleas Look Like?
Fleas are very small parasites that are about 2.5 mm in size and feed on the blood of their host. They are yellowish to dark brown in color depending on if they have just fed.
Their torso is very flat and they have very long hind legs that they use to jump from host to host. They can jump about 6-8 inches high.
Their bodies are also covered in hair that serves to root them to the host. Adults have mouth parts which are used to extract the host’s blood.
The flea’s back legs are also designed to propel the flea forwards through the animal’s fur at high speed, which helps the insect parasite to evade the teeth and claws of the animal host as it attempts to remove the flea through biting, chewing and scratching activities.
Fleas are commonly visible moving in infested pet’s fur. Their presence may be marked by reddened skin.

There are a couple of ways that you can use to check if you have a fleas in your home and here are some of the signs to look for:

Areas To Inspect For Fleas
Fleas can be anywhere in your home but will nest in places close to their food source which are pets and us humans. The areas you will want to inspect are any areas that you and your pets spend the most time. These areas include the following.
- Inspect Carpets & Rugs
- Inspect Pet Crates & Bedding
- Inspect Upholstered Furniture
Home Remedy Flea Inspection
There are some inexpensive ways to inspect for fleas just by using items that you already have in your home.
First, if you have pets you will want to inspect them for fleas or evidence of fleas. All you need is a comb and a bowl of soapy water.
Comb through your pets coat and see if the comb picks up and fleas. If so, then place the fleas in the soapy water so they die.
If you don’t find any fleas look for evidence of fleas. Redness of the pets skin is one sign and also flea dirt. Flea dirt looks like coffee grinds.
If you find flea dirt then place it in the soapy water and if it turns a reddish color then it is a good sign of fleas on the pet.
One of the best ways to check for fleas is by setting up a trap. All you will need is a bowl of water mixed with any type of dish soap. Just mix 2 tablespoons of dish soap in a bowl filled with water. Place the bowl next to a window. A sliding glass door that lets light into your home is ideal for this.
The fleas will be attracted to the light and will get trapped in the soapy water and die. This is a great way to determine if you in fact dealing with fleas but also can help you determine if you have a bigger flea infestation than expected. The more fleas dead in the trap usually means a larger infestation.
How To Get Rid of Fleas
The first thing that you will need to do is prepare the area for treatment. This includes removing all the clutter from the floors. Remove all bed and mattress sheets and coverings from the mattress and or box springs. Make sure that all carpeted floor mats have been vacuumed and placed in a plastic garbage bag and tie it in a knot and place it outside.
If you have pet beds, pet crates you can also vacuum them as well because there is a good chance that there could be flea eggs in those items as well.
Try not to just take the area rugs and pet beds and shake them outside because the eggs could spread to the outer areas of the home where the flea eggs could hatch and start an infestation in the outer areas of your home.
Next, if you have carpeted floors in the rooms you will need to vacuum the carpeted floors. Vacuuming the floors on a daily basis has been proven to remove 50% of the flea eggs.
Once you are finished vacuuming please empty the vacuum bag in an outside garbage can or dumpster. If you have a vacuum that uses canisters just dump the canister outside and wash it out in hot water or wipe down with alcohol. This will prevent flea eggs from spreading to other areas of the home.
